Abstract

Background and aims: Tooth decay is one of the most common dental diseases and the most important cause of tooth decay is the bacteria Streptococcus mutans. Due to the increased resistance of bacteria to antibiotics and their side effects and the use of Teucrium chamaedrys as bactericide in traditional medicine, this study was aimed to study the antimicrobial effects of hydroalcoholic extract of T. chamaedrys on the bacteria S. mutans invitro. Methods: In this experimental study, at first the extract of T. chamaedrys was taken by maceration method. Standard strains of S. mutans with PTCC 1683 and ATCC 35668 were prepared by lyophilized from Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology (IROST), and were used to investigate the effects of T. chamaedrys on S. mutans. Then, the antibacterial effects of T. chamaedrys extract were evaluated on S. mutans by broth micro dilution methods and MIC and MBC were obtained. Results: The results of this study showed the MIC of hydroalcoholic extract of T. chamaedrys on S. mutans obtained by the broth micro dilution method, was 128 mg/ml and MBC was 256 mg/ml. Conclusion: According to this study, it can be concluded that the T. chamaedrys plant has little effect on S. mutans and tooth decay.
